FRAME: Knowledge Sharing for the Global NRM Community

Denise Mortimer

Anna van der Heijden

This case study will present the nearly one decade’s experience of the FRAME project. A USAID funded project, FRAME aims to promote knowledge sharing within the global natural resources management (NRM) community.

Recognizing that NRM decision-makers at times lacked the knowledge needed to make informed decisions, USAID initiated the FRAME project in 1998 to improve knowledge sharing within the NRM community. As such, FRAME is among the earliest programs designed specifically to address knowledge management in the NRM and development community.

This case study presents the project's experience since its inception. Over the years, the FRAME project has relied on a combination of knowledge management approaches to strengthen knowledge sharing among NRM practitioners and decision makers. This presentation will demonstrate how the FRAME project changed to capitalize on Web 2.0 tools as they evolved.  It will discuss the successes and challenges to knowledge sharing among a global, diverse, multi-language audience. The case study will specifically address FRAME’s approach to using knowledge management to positively influence NRM decision making. Finally, the presentation will speak to the challenges faced and lessons learned by the project.
