Although the blogs and social networks on the social welfare and social development issues are in a very nascent stage in India, as compared to Web 2.0 applications targeting campus and corporate netizens, these new innovations are rapidly becoming common phenomena in developmental organizations in India. The civil society organizations and local governments in India, equipped with modern ICT tools and applications, sharing knowledge - both modern and indigenous, exchanging practical solutions which were effective elsewhere, updating community information and community of practices through a number of innovative Web 2.0 applications, such as blogs, collaborative social networks, file sharing platforms, etc. For example, recently Government of India announced the community radio policy allowing establishment of community radio stations across the country. The community broadcasters in this South Asian region started a number of Web 2.0 applications for updating community information, sharing knowledge on new developments in this area. Present paper discusses on the Web 2.0 initiatives and applications in India, undertaken by different civil society organizations, local governments and volunteers that address the prevalent societal needs towards development, critical appraisals of different socio-economic developmental programmes undertaken by national/local agencies or government bodies, or, exchanging solutions towards achieving development goals. The present paper also describes the impact of such applications on the policy makers, practitioners and community workers.
